REAL SEX IN THE MOVIES 2013: Charlotte Gainsbourg Joins Lars von Trier Porno 'Nymphomaniac'

The French star of "Melancholia" and "Antichrist" will star alongside Stellan Skarsgard in von Trier's hard-core drama.

COLOGNE, Germany - Charlotte Gainsbourg is back for a third try with Danish director Lars von Trier, signing up to co-star in von Trier's pornographic drama Nymphomaniac alongside Stellan Skarsgard.

Gainsbourg has starred in two of von Trier's most controversial films: the graphic horror film Antichrist, co-starring Willem Defoe; and Melancholia, which got the director banned from Cannes after he made jokes apparently expressing sympathy for Hitler at at press conference.
But Nymphomaniac, which promises to trace “the erotic life of a woman from the age of zero to the age of 50," could be von Trier's most scandalous film yet. Gainsbourg is set to play Joe, a woman who tells the story of her sexual history to the older bachelor Seligman (Skarsgard).
Von Trier plans to shoot both a soft and hardcore version of the English-language feature, with the latter expected to include graphic depictions of penetration. German funding body the NRW Filmstifftung is backing Nymphomaniac with $1.6 million (€1.2 million) in production subsidies. The film will be shot entirely in the German state of North-Rhein Westphalia, where von Trier shot Antichrist. Production is set to begin this summer.

Toronto Buyers Hot for Lars von Trier's Porno 'Nymphomaniac'

The hardcore feature exploring female sexuality, expected to star Stellan Skarsgard, pre-sells to the U.K., Poland, Czech Republic and Benelux.

COLOGNE, Germany - International buyers are hot for Lars von Trier's porno project Nymphomaniac. Sales agent TrustNordisk closed several pre-sale deals for the still-in-development feature from the controversial Danish director at the Toronto Film Festival.
Artificial Eye in the U.K., Poland's Gutek Film, Aero Films in the Czech Republic and Wild Bunch in Benelux grabbed rights for the feature, along with Insomina for ex-Yugoslavian territories. Central Partnership picked up Russian rights to Nymphomaniac ahead of the Toronto fest. Nymphomaniac is still in pre-production.
Von Trier is expected to deliver a script by the end of the year and begin shooting next summer. Long-time collaborator Stellan Skarsgard (Thor) has said von Trier has asked him to play the male lead. Von Trier is expected to deliver two cuts of the film, described as an "explicit exploration of female sexuality aged 0 to 50": one hardcore and a softer version for mainstream release.

Chalk it up to years of physical romance consistently interrupted by Autobot vs. Decepticon warring, but Shia LaBeouf is antsy to make sweet, sweet love on the big screen.
During rounds for his new movie Lawless, the actor has been vocal on his readiness to engage in actual sex for his upcoming collaboration with provocateur Lars von Trier: the two-picture lovefest Nymphomaniac. Costarring Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stellan Skarsgard, the films follow Joe (Gainsbourg), a nymphomaniac, as she recounts her lengthy sexual history to an old man who takes the beaten down woman into his home. One assumes that at some point in her sexual journey, LaBeouf pops by to work his magic.
Today, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot, The Adventures of TinTin) and Danish actress Connie Nielsen (Boss) have also joined the cast. As LaBeouf has confirmed in multiple interviews, Nymphomaniac, which begins production this month, won't feature simulated sex. Mr. Von Trier wants reality, and has found a cast that's ready to go there.
The depiction of graphic sex acts in film has been rare, but Nymphomaniac isn't the first instance — even in Hollywood. Take a look back at our gallery of the few instances where actors got their freak on in the name of art:
